Research Grant and Scholars Programs

The College Center for Research and Fellowships (CCRF) manages a number of research grant and scholars programs. You can learn more about each below or through the links to the left.

Important policy note: Students on a leave of absence from the College are ineligible for College-based research funding and are not allowed to hold any undergraduate research position at the University of Chicago.


Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: 

College Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities Scholars Program (CRASSH): College Research in the Arts, Social Sciences, and the Humanities (CRASSH) grants are competitive awards intended to enhance the educational experience of University of Chicago College students by supporting scholarly research and creative inquiry experiences guided and mentored by faculty. These awards are designed to support the student in more deeply engaging with their discipline or research project with reduced financial burden during the academic year. These awards are explicitly for students who have identified or are already pursuing research on a specific faculty-led research project.

2020-2021 Academic Year Application Deadlines:

  • Autumn Quarter: September 8, 2020
  • Winter Quarter: January 11, 2021

PRISM: the PRISM Research Scholars program supports current College students engaged in advanced undergraduate research.  The program aims to promote substantive, faculty-directed summer research that advances scholarly research skills, including research design, execution, and dissemination, in targeted Social Science, Arts, and Humanities disciplines.

2021 Summer Application Deadline:

  • April 2, 2021

Smart Scholars Program: The Smart Scholars Program supports research opportunities at the Smart Museum of Art in close collaboration with curatorial and research staff and affiliated faculty. The museum also promotes excellence in undergraduate education at the University of Chicago by expanding opportunities for object-centered inquiry. The Smart Scholars Program is designed to foster an expanded range of scholarly and creative expressions for undergraduate researchers interested in the visual arts and humanities. 


Open-discipline:

College Global Health Research Scholars ProgramThe Global Health Research Scholars program awards competitive research grants intended to enhance the educational experience of University of Chicago undergraduates by supporting scholarly research on global health guided and mentored by faculty. Students research closely with faculty, research cluster or institute; this does not support independent or BA thesis research. Student's across all disciplines are invited to apply but the research must be focused on global health issues. The Global Health Research Scholars program fosters opportunities for faculty mentorship and encourages students to develop their research skills.

  • Winter Quarter: January 11, 2021

Dean's Fund for Undergraduate ResearchThe Dean's Fund for Undergraduate Research supports current undergraduates in the College engaged in scholarly research mentored by a faculty and/or other research mentor(s). It also supports conference travel if a student is attending to present a research poster or paper.

2020-2021 Academic Year Application Deadlines:

  • Autumn Quarter: October 26, 2020
  • Winter Quarter: January 11, 2021
  • Spring Quarter: April 2, 2021

College Research Fellows Program: The College Research Fellows Program fosters excellence in scholarly research and creative inquiry by sponsoring academic-year research positions for undergraduates with UChicago faculty members. The program connects faculty with talented College students to support their research projects, and students have the opportunity to build relationships with faculty mentors and develop their research skills. Only faculty members may apply for a grant, but students are highly encouraged to share this opportunity with their faculty mentors if they are interested in participating in the program.

  • Autumn Quarter (ONLY): September 21, 2020

Liews Family College Research Fellows Fund: The Liews Family College Research Fellows Fund provides grants to support to pursue undergraduate research experiences closely mentored by faculty, and/or as a part of a research cluster or institute; this does not support independent or BA thesis research.

2020-2021 Academic Year Application Deadline:

  • Autumn Quarter (ONLY): November 16, 2020

College Summer Research Fellows Fund: The College Summer Research Fellows Fund provides grants to support summer research opportunities for undergraduate students who plan to pursue a doctoral degree in the liberal arts or science field.
