Straetz Scholar Benefits and Expectations

SCHOLAR BENEFITS AND EXPECTATIONS

  • Straetz International Undergraduate Research Scholars receive a grant of up to $6,500. Grants are disbursed in one installment at the start of the summer. Grants are taxable and students are responsible for understanding the tax implications of receiving a grant.
  • Straetz Scholars will benefit from annual CCRF research programming and events for the community of undergraduate research scholars.
  • Straetz Scholars will have guided opportunities to reflect on how their international research experience bears on their future goals and postgraduate endeavors, including but not limited to advanced study, professional careers in a broad array of fields, and research-based grants and fellowships—notably, awards that value international research experiences like Fulbright Research Grant

  • Straetz Scholars are expected to demonstrate integrity, maturity, and cultural competency while representing the University of Chicago abroad. 
  • Straetz Scholars are required to participate in a Study Abroad orientation in advance of their summer departure, typically during Spring Quarter.
  • All Straetz Scholars are required to present their research at the annual University of Chicago Undergraduate Research Symposium (held every April). If unable to present at the first symposium after their return, they will be required to do so before graduation.
  • For the duration of the award period, Straetz Scholars must continue to be actively engaged in their research project. Scholars are expected to spend an average of 37.5 hours per week on their research during their funded summer over approximately 10 weeks. 
  • For the duration of the award period, Straetz Scholars must remain full-time undergraduates in good standing with the University of Chicago. 
  • All Straetz Scholars will complete a post-award survey and may be invited to submit annual program alumni surveys.
