Academic Data Collectors for The Poverty Tracker
Opportunity Description:
Since 2012, The Poverty Tracker, a joint project of Robin Hood and the Columbia University Center on Poverty and Social Policy, has been a groundbreaking longitudinal study of the dynamics of poverty and disadvantage in New York City. Unlike other surveys, it explores the impact of poverty and material hardship over time, surveying a representative sample of New Yorkers every three months. The University of Chicago Survey Lab is supporting these efforts by conducting a sample refresh of participants. Using random, probability-based sampling, the Survey Lab will recruit New York City residents who speak English, Mandarin, or Spanish to participate in a 10-minute survey. The survey collects information on respondent characteristics, recent experiences, and views of New York City.
Primary Responsibilities:
Data collectors will administer the survey over the phone to respondents across New York City from all walks of life following standardized procedures and tracking contact outcomes. Students may also check the accuracy of responses and learn data management techniques.
Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements:
Students in any field and at any level are encouraged to apply. You receive paid training sessions both in the study protocol, and to become an ethical, competent, and effective interviewer. Interest in varied tasks for different types of research is needed as is some level of flexibility in scheduling. Students should demonstrate an ability to follow a set protocol, active listening skills, and a willingness to learn.
