Undergraduate Research Assistant – The McKeon Center
Opportunity Description:
The McKeon Center invites applications for an Undergraduate Research Assistant to support a research project focused on the archives of Richard P. McKeon, one of the University of Chicago’s most influential educators and philosophers. His extensive collection of papers and audio recordings, housed in the Special Collections Research Center at the Regenstein Library, provides a rich resource for scholarly exploration.
This position offers hands-on experience in archival research and academic scholarship, with the opportunity to engage deeply with rare historical materials. The role is part of a project to develop a new website dedicated to the life and work of Richard McKeon, with an anticipated completion date of June 2026.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Conduct archival research in the McKeon archives at the Special Collections Research Center, Regenstein Library.
- Assist with organizing, and maintaining research materials including Richard McKeon’s lecture notes, course syllabi, unpublished articles, and research notes.
- Prepare research summaries, reports, and bibliographies.
- Digitize selected archival materials.
- Collaborate with McKeon Center team and fellow student researchers.
- Adhere to established protocols for handling rare and fragile materials while maintaining accurate records.
Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements:
- Current undergraduate student at the University of Chicago.
- Strong interest in the social sciences, humanities, archival studies, library science, or related fields.
- Excellent organizational skills and keen attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Prior experience with archival research or special collections is helpful, though not required.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively.
