Undergraduate Summer Internship in Transportation

Opportunity Description:

The 11-week program offers up to ten selected undergraduate students the opportunity to gain firsthand experience in conducting highway and transportation studies and to actively participate in transportation research with graduate students under the supervision of the faculty members associated with the Centers.

Interns are assigned to one, in some cases two, ongoing transportation engineering research projects, and are expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week on that project. During the weekends and evenings, interns will often spend this time getting to know fellow interns and graduate students or exploring the many amenities Austin has to offer.

Colloquium Series

All UTC-UI interns enroll in a colloquium series designed to introduce them to different aspects within the transportation field. Over the course of the program there are weekly seminars on a wide range of topics given by distinguished academics and practicing engineers. Students are encouraged to exchange ideas and discuss the connections between research and industry.

Support & Accommodations

Interns who are not current UT students will each receive a Fellowship of $4,500. Interns who are current UT students will each receive a Fellowship of $3,500.

Participants are encouraged to use the room and board plans provided by The University of Texas at Austin. Information regarding the University's summer housing as well as nearby off-campus housing is available through the Division of Housing and Food Service.

Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements:

The internship is open to any currently enrolled college engineering junior or senior who is considering pursuing a graduate education or career in transportation. The internship accepts students who have both the desire and ability to work on transportation research projects and have demonstrated computer, math, and writing skills. Only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible for Fellowships; other students in the U.S. are welcome to apply if they do not require financial support.
