Sensationalism in 20th Century Latin American Literature, Visual Arts, and Popular Culture

Opportunity Description:


Undergraduate Research position available, for project on 20th century Latin American literature, visual arts, and popular culture. Spanish-proficiency required. Research assistants will read through crime tabloids and sensationalist newspapers from Chile, Colombia, and Mexico published in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, as well as national newspapers published in the same decades. We will use software (MAXQDA) to complete a comparative analysis of both the kinds of news covered by sensationalist newspapers and newspapers of record, and the photographs (particularly the type of subjects photographed) that appear in each of these types of publications. 

Assistantship includes paid training in the use of MAXQDA software. Work will alternate between quantitative analysis and historical and interpretative contextualization of works of art and literature that draw from the same sensationalist newspapers we will analyze. Flexible hours and mostly remote. 

Students involved in this project will be required to present the showcase the skills they've developed and to present their findings at the UChicago Undergraduate Research Symposium.

Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements:
