Robert L. Akerley Anthropology Collections Internship

Opportunity Description:


The Denver Museum of Nature & Science Robert L. Akerley Anthropology Collections Internship is open to currently enrolled, undergraduate, and graduate-level students. The interns will reorganize collections by culture group in the Anthropology Collections. The intern will be trained in artifact re-housing, artifact inventory, processing, movement, cataloging, data entry, and analysis. The mentors for the intern are the Anthropology Collections Manager and Anthropology Assistant Collections Manager depending on the mutually agreed upon assignments. The possibility remains for small-scale research projects tailored to the intern's personal interests. Priority will be given to students interested in Anthropology or Archaeology. This is a 10 week stipend internship.

The Robert L. Akerley Anthropology Collections intern will participate in the following activities:

  • Update database record updates in EMu collections management system, including implementing new barcoding system, updating locations, and updating catalog records
  • Collaborate with volunteers recruited to assist with object movement
  • Research some of collections as directed by curators or collections managers to establish cultural affiliations

Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements: 

  • Priority is given to students interested in anthropology or archaeology. Internships are offered to currently enrolled, undergraduate or graduate-level students. Experience or education related to conservation and/or anthropology.
  • Experience working with museum collections
  • Familiarity with relational databases
  • Organized; ability to self-start and maintain balance between a number of projects
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong ability to multitask
  • Ability to work as part of a team and take direction from supervisor
