Empirical Study of Mystical Experience
Opportunity Description:
This project undertakes a quantitative, evidence-based study of mystical experience within a contemporary Sufi community in Morocco—the Karkariya order—by systematically analyzing over 1,000 publicly available YouTube testimonials from Sufi practitioners. Despite the global significance of Sufi spirituality, empirical research on mystical phenomena within Islamic communities remains rare. By drawing on scientific models of mystical experience, notably the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ) and its core dimensions—unity, transcendence of time and space, noetic quality/objectivity, interrelatedness, primacy of love, sacredness/awesomeness, positive mood, and ineffability—we aim to contribute a rigorous, data-driven perspective to the academic study of religion and consciousness. The undergraduate research assistant will play an integral role in every step of the project. Since the testimonials are delivered in Arabic (with some in French), the ideal candidate will be conversant in English and Arabic (with French language skills considered a plus). Their primary responsibilities will be to assist with data collection by transcribing and translating the testimonials, using AI-based transcription tools, while ensuring accuracy and contextual nuance. They will help code testimonials according to the MEQ categories, creating a standardized dataset to analyze the prevalence, intensity, and qualitative aspects of mystical experiences described in each account. In addition, the student will assist with the statistical analysis of the dataset, summarizing trends in mystical experience across demographic, linguistic, or narrative parameters. Their work will help identify common themes, variations in intensity, and unique features of Sufi mystical testimony, contributing to the evidence base for understanding religious experience in non-Western, lived contexts. Overall, the student will gain first-hand experience in empirical research methods, digital humanities, and cross-cultural religious studies, while making a substantive contribution to a study at the intersection of psychology, neuroscience, and Islamic mysticism.
Primary Responsibilities:
Data Collection and Transcription Locate and curate a database of over 1,000 relevant YouTube video testimonials from members of the Karkariya Sufi order. Transcribe audio content from Arabic (and occasionally French) to written text, utilizing AI-based transcription tools and verifying for completeness and accuracy. Qualitative Coding Code each testimonial according to the core dimensions of the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ), such as unity, transcendence, noetic quality, sacredness, and ineffability. Maintain a detailed and standardized coding schema to facilitate systematic analysis. Data Management Assist in building and organizing a structured dataset that captures both quantitative and qualitative aspects of mystical experiences for subsequent analysis. Statistical and Thematic Analysis Assist in summarizing and analyzing coded data to identify trends across demographic, linguistic, and experiential factors. Contribute to the identification of recurring themes, patterns in intensity, and distinguishing features in accounts of mystical experiences. Reporting and Collaboration Summarize findings in written reports for the research team. Collaborate with faculty and other research team members, contributing insights and helping refine research protocols as needed.
Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements:
The undergraduate researcher will assist with all stages of a quantitative, evidence-based study of mystical experience in a contemporary Moroccan Sufi community. Their main duties will include transcribing and translating Sufi practitioner testimonials from Arabic (and occasionally French) into English, using AI-based transcription tools and ensuring linguistic accuracy. The researcher will help code the testimonials according to established scientific models of mystical experience, organize the data in a standardized format, and support statistical and thematic analysis of the resulting dataset. Through this work, the student will contribute to identifying trends and patterns in Sufi mystical experience, while gaining hands-on experience in empirical research, digital humanities, and cross-cultural religious studies.
First year, sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate standing (students with prior research or coursework in religious studies, psychology, linguistics, area studies, or related fields are especially encouraged to apply) Conversational or higher proficiency in Arabic (with some French a plus). Experience with transcription, translation, or qualitative coding (coursework or prior research assistantships preferred) Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in working with diverse source materials. Basic familiarity with spreadsheets, data organization, or statistical tools (such as Excel, Google Sheets, or introductory-level data analysis). Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. Interest in Sufism, Islamic studies, or the scientific study of religious experience.
An added benefit of this research experience is its integration with my upcoming spring seminars, "Dreams, Visions, and Mystical Experience" and "Major Trends in Islamic Mysticism." These courses will serve as capstone venues where the findings of our project can be presented, discussed, and developed. The undergraduate researcher will be encouraged to enroll in one or both seminars, providing a unique opportunity for academic engagement and interdisciplinary dialogue. Participation will enable them to present research outcomes to their peers, contribute to in-class discussions, and situate their work within broader theoretical frameworks.
Knowledge or skills gained from the experience:
This research experience offers the undergraduate student an introduction to empirical, interdisciplinary research at the intersection of psychology, digital humanities, and religious studies. Through hands-on participation, the student will develop research skills, including data collection and management, AI-assisted transcription and translation methods, and qualitative data coding informed by established psychological frameworks such as the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ). The use of digital tools to handle large datasets from multiple languages will enhance the student’s technical proficiency, while work in cross-cultural and religious contexts will broaden their analytical perspective. The undergraduate researcher will also learn to apply scientific rigor to qualitative material, gaining insight into coding protocols, inter-rater reliability, and the nuances of extracting meaningful patterns from narrative texts. As the project progresses, they will be involved in basic statistical analysis and visualization of results, fostering their competency in interpreting and presenting empirical findings. The project encourages initiative and independence, while offering mentorship in designing research questions, framing arguments, and synthesizing complex information for varied audiences. For students with interest in psychology, neuroscience, religious studies, or global studies, this experience provides a unique vantage point on practical and theoretical issues in the study of consciousness and spirituality. Exposure to groundbreaking work on religious phenomena will help broaden the student’s research horizons and contextual understanding.
Application Process:
Interested undergraduate students should submit the following application materials: Cover Letter (1-2 pages): Describe your interest in the project, relevant coursework or experience (especially with languages, research, or data analysis), and what you hope to gain from participating. Current Resume/CV: Be sure to include your class-standing, major(s)/minor(s), language proficiency, and any previous research or work experience. Unofficial Transcript: To confirm academic standing and relevant coursework.
