Data Science + Neuroscience Research Opportunity

Opportunity Description:

The EMK Lab is seeking motivated UChicago undergraduates for research positions in data science and neuroscience.

Data Science projects are ideal if you have a quantitative background (CS/Stats/Biology/Physics/Psychology) and are interested in gaining experience with behavioral and neural data analysis. There are projects involving classification of neural and behavioral data using statistical and machine learning methods. This position is ideal if you are interested in time series and/or image analysis.

Neuroscience projects are suited to those interested in working with animal models of learning and memory. You will get hands on experience with a range of techniques including 3D printing, molecular biology (PCR and gel electrophoresis), spatial learning behavior experiments, electrophysiology and optogenetics. Prior experience is ideal but not essential.

Primary Responsibilities:

Data Science: Large-scale behavioral and neural data. Create efficient data analysis pipelines. Digging through data to find interesting patterns. Neuroscience: 3D design/printing, PCR genotyping, spatial learning, electrophysiology and optogenetics.

Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements:

Curiosity for neuroscience, data science and engineering. Self-motivated, goal driven and responsible.

Data Science: Math and stats skills, coding experience in Python.

Neuroscience: molecular biology, prior experience in lab work. High degree of manual dexterity.

Preferred Skills:

These are nice to have but not required. Github, Unix, Matlab Rodent handling, molecular biology. 3D design and printing. Histology

Knowledge or skills gained from the experience:

Data Science: Improve Python coding skills. Develop an understanding of behavioral and neural data analysis. Become familiar with using statistical and machine learning methods on large scale data. Gain skills in extracting, transforming and structuring raw data.

Neuroscience: genotyping, behavioral experiments, electrophysiology, optogenetics. 3D printing.

Application Process:

Send an email with title "Data Science Internship" or "Neuroscience Internship" to jaiyu@uchicago.edu Attach a CV and unofficial transcript. Data Science applicants will be asked to complete a Python coding task. Neuroscience applicants maybe asked to complete an in lab interview.

Application Deadline:

Monday, October 31, 2022
