2024 Truman Scholarship Statement of Intent -- Required for a CCRF Advising Session in August 2023

If you intend to apply for the Truman Scholarship Campus Application this cycle and wish to meet with a CCRF advisor for a 30-minute advising appointment during August 2023, please submit the following materials via email to Arthur Salvo (aksalvo@uchicago.edu) before August 1, 2023. This is an optional meeting. The Truman Scholarship Campus Application is due on September 15, 2023.

In your email, include the following attachments:

I. An up-to-date CV.

II. A single Word document with answers to the following essay questions, in the order provided below:

  • 1) Leadership. Describe one specific example of your leadership. Be sure to address: A) concrete outcomes you delivered, or what changed as a result of your intervention; B) problem solving or creative thinking you employed; C) how this example lines up with your own public service and academic plans, or other commitments; D) what you learned about yourself as a leader and your ability to motivate others. (The writer of your letter of recommendation re: Leadership Abilities and Potential must confirm this experience.) 350 words max.
     
  • 2) Public Service. Describe a recent particularly satisfying public service activity and explain why it was meaningful (do not repeat experience described in 1). (The writer of your letter of recommendation re: Public Service must confirm this experience.) 350 words max.
     
  • 3) Problem or Needs of Society. Describe the problem or needs of society you want to address when you enter public service. If possible, use statistical data to define the magnitude of the problem. 250 words max.
     
  • 4) Graduate Program. Briefly describe the graduate education program you intend to pursue if you receive a Truman Scholarship. Please tell us what you hope to do and what position do you hope to have upon completing your graduate studies? We would also like to know what do you hope to do and what position do you hope to have five to seven years later. 350 words max.
