Provides full support for at least the first year of a two-year Master’s in China Studies issued by Peking University

The Yenching Academy of Peking University Scholars program offers support for at least the first year of a two-year Master’s in China Studies (in English). The Academy's goal is to shape new generations of global citizens with a nuanced understanding of China. Yenching Scholars receive a full tuition scholarship for the first year of the program, accommodation in the residential college, basic medical insurance, a monthly stipend, and expenses related to research. 

Students who maintain a good academic standing and plan to stay in Beijing during their second academic year can apply for the second-year Yenching Fellowship, covering tuition, accommodation, basic medical insurance, and a monthly stipend.

Applicants choose from one of six concentrations:

  • Literature and Culture
  • History and Archaeology
  • Philosophy and Religion
  • Law and Society
  • Politics and International Relations
  • Economics and Management

Yenching Scholars are deeply immersed in Chinese culture through excursions to various parts of China and an intensive Chinese language program.

Eligibility Requirements

Yenching Academy Scholars will exhibit the following qualities and characteristics:

  • Outstanding academic record – CCRF recommends 3.7 GPA or higher
  • BA required
  • Any currently enrolled degree awarded no later than August 31, 2021
  • Evident commitment to and preparation for rigorous graduate studies
  • Strong interest in the interdisciplinary study of China, including a research proposal that aligns well with the Yenching Academy Scholars program
  • A record of extracurricular achievement, community engagement, social responsibility, and leadership potential
  • Demonstrated English proficiency 
  • Chinese language proficiency valued, but not required

Please note: Applicants with any form of identification from Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan have a different application process. Application Process

2020 UChicago Yenching Academy Campus Process

Current students in the College and College alumni must be nominated by UChicago.

Applicants who are graduate students should reach out to UChicagoGRAD.

 

To be eligible for UChicago nomination, you must complete all of the following:

  • Virtually attend or review a Yenching Academy Scholars Program: Information Session and Essay Overview Workshop
  • On or before October 26, 2020: Complete and submit Stage 1 of the UChicago Yenching Academy Campus Nomination Application (Survey Monkey application available here). CCRF will then add you to the 2020 UChicago Yenching Academy Cohort and non-credit Canvas course. CCRF staff reserve the right to determine whether or not applicants will be eligible to join the 2020 UChicago Yenching Academy Cohort based on the materials submitted in Stage 1 of this applicationTo complete Stage 1, you will be asked to provide the following:
    • Biographical and academic information
    • Information about your proposed course of study at the Yenching Academy
    • The names of two faculty members from whom you plan to request letters of recommendation
    • The name of one faculty mentor who you plan to ask for feedback on your research proposal
    • CV/academic resume (2 pages maximum) detailing activities from your freshman year forward. Please do not include high school activities.
    • Draft research proposal: As the application timeline is short, it is important that you have an idea for a feasible research project that you would like to conduct as a Yenching Academy Scholar. Following the template (v1 pdf / docx), please be prepared to upload a draft research proposal (750 word maximum, single spaced, 12 point font, normal margins) that details the following:
      • the research question(s) you would wish to explore, 
      • the academic background (courses, research experience, etc.) that prepares you to successfully research this question, 
      • a summary of current research on this question and how your research project would contribute to our knowledge of the topic, 
      • why the Yenching Academy Scholars program would be the best place to research this topic, and
      • a description of your research plan.
  • Meet all the requirements and deadlines of the 2020 UChicago Yenching Academy Campus Process (see the 2020 UChicago Yenching Academy Canvas course for details), including:
    • November 2, 2020: First drafts of both essays due in Canvas and two faculty recommendations requested through Stage 2 of the UChicago Yenching Academy Campus Nomination Application
    • Attend one First Draft Review Appointment with a CCRF advisor
    • November 18, 2020: Second drafts of both essays due in Canvas. Optional Second Draft Review Appointments will then be offered to all current Yenching Cohort members.
  • On or before December 2, 2020: Complete and submit Stage 2 of the UChicago Yenching Academy Campus Nomination Application. Your UChicago campus nomination will be based on the materials submitted in Stage 2. Late or incomplete materials or recommendations will not be accepted. CCRF reserves the right to decide not to nominate applicants, if the materials submitted by the Stage 2 deadline do not represent the standards of the University of Chicago. 
    • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members (both letters must be submitted by December 1, 2020)
    • Final draft of your Personal Statement (750 words maximum): Self-introduction and well-articulated explanation of how you would make the most of the Yenching Academy program experience, as well as how it would benefit your career.
    • Final draft of your Research Proposal (1 page maximum)
    • CV/academic resume (2 pages maximum) detailing activities from your freshman year forward. Please do not include high school activities.
  • On or before December 4, 2020: UChicago Campus Deadline: All nominees must submit their complete and final applications through the separate online Yenching Academy application portal, making sure to include any other necessary supporting materials, such as an official transcript, any diplomas or certificates of enrollment, and/or demonstrated English proficiency.

Please note that the timeline above is an overview only, with dates and requirements subject to addition and change. Members of the 2020 UChicago Yenching Academy Cohort should refer to the 2020 UChicago Yenching Academy Canvas course for the latest information about deadlines and requirements.

It is your responsibility to be aware of and work to the 2020 UChicago Yenching Academy Campus Process application procedures and deadlines. The CCRF and its associated staff are not responsible for late submissions, including late or missing letters of recommendation, or missed campus nomination or national deadlines. There is no recourse at the national level for missed deadlines or incomplete applications. Please plan accordingly.
