Speech Perception and Production Laboratory

Opportunity Description:


The Speech Perception and Production Laboratory (http://speechperceptionproductionlab.com), led by Dr. Melissa Baese-Berk, is looking for undergraduate research assistants to join the lab and work on a variety of research projects. Our lab focuses on how people understand and produce language, and focuses on many varieties of language including: African American Language, Spanish Heritage speech, American Sign Language, and speech by learners of many languages including Basque, English, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Thai, among others.

We are currently recruiting research assistants for two projects. The first examines how individuals perceive speech in noisy situations, especially in medical situations. The second examines how individuals learn new speech sounds in an unfamiliar language.

Primary Responsibilities: 

Depending on applicant experience, other responsibilities may include: programming experiments, analysis, stimulus creation, data coding, data organization, literature search and review, recruiting participants, scheduling and running participants for experiments, and other research tasks. The research assistant will be invited to attend weekly lab meetings with other members of the lab. Opportunities may also be available for students to continue to participate in lab activities and develop independent research projects.

Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements: 

All technical skills are trained in the lab, so you do not need research experience (or even linguistics experience) to apply. We are looking for people who are excited to work on a team research project and are excited to learn more about language. We especially encourage applications from individuals in groups underrepresented in STEM.

Necessary qualifications:
• Interest in language
• Interest in gaining research experience
• Ability to work in collaborative settings, but is self-motivated and can work independently as well.
• Punctual attendance at research meetings and other research-related responsibilities
• Responsible, dedicated, detail-oriented


Preferred Skills: 

Helpful (but not necessary) qualifications:
• Prior coursework in linguistics, psychology, languages, or communication disorders
