Morris K. Udall Undergraduate Scholarship

Supports second- and third-year students who are interested in environmental public policy.

The Morris K. Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college students who are committed to careers related to the environment, tribal public policy, or Native American health care. Finalists receive $7,000 scholarships for academic expenses.

Udall Scholars must attend a four-day orientation in Tucson, Arizona, to meet with other Scholars, elected officials, environmental and tribal leaders. The Foundation will arrange travel from the Scholar's home or school; lodging and meals are provided.

Eligibility Requirements

This award is open to second and third-year undergraduate students who are US citizens, permanent residents or nationals.

There are two branches of the award: Environmental Conservation and Native American Public Policy/Health Care.

The University of Chicago may nominate four individuals for the national competition in Enivronmental Conservation, and four individuals for the national competition in Native American Policy/Health Care. In order to compete for the national award, you must be nominated by the University.

Environmental: For students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to the environment including policy, engineering, science, education, urban planning and renewal, business, health, justice, economics, and other related fields;


To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to tribal public policy, including fields related to tribal sovereignty, tribal governance, tribal law, Native American education, Native American justice, natural resource management, cultural preservation and revitalization, Native American economic development, and other areas affecting Native American communities; or

To Native American and Alaska Native students who have demonstrated commitment to careers related to Native health care, including health care administration, social work, medicine, dentistry, counseling, and research into health conditions affecting Native American communities, and other related fields.

Application Process

Students must submit a complete campus application by the internal deadline: Friday, January 10, 2020.  Udall candidates will undergo a campus selection process. The University of Chicago can nominate up to four candidates for the two branches of the award.
