DAAD Study Scholarship: At a Glance

Eligibility:

  • US citizens and permanent residents; non-US citizens who live in the US and whose BA will be granted by a US institution
  • Fourth-year students (fellowships process begins during 3rd year) and recent graduates (completed their degree no more than 6 years ago)

Selection Criteria: 

  • Rationale for pursuing a specific MA program in Germany
  • Academic achievement and future academic potential
  • Preparation, feasibility, relevance of applicant’s study plans

Candidates for the DAAD Study Scholarship affirm the following statements:

  • I can explain how pursuing my desired MA program will equip me to pursue a specific field of research 
  • I can justify why it is necessary to pursue this specific course of study at my chosen institution in Germany
  • I possess the requisite academic background, German language skills, and research background to succeed in my chosen graduate program

Extensive Description

The DAAD Study Scholarship provides funding for a full Master's degree program at a German university or for study at a German university as part of a postgraduate or Master's degree program completed in the home country.

Eligibility Requirements

The scholarship is open to those who meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Students in their last year of undergraduate studies at an accredited US or Canadian university.
  • US or Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
  • Foreign nationals who live in the USA or in Canada by the time of application deadline are eligible, if your last degree was obtained in the US/Canada, or you will have received a degree in the US/Canada before your scholarship starts. All other foreign nationals may need to apply via a different DAAD office.
  • Recent BA/BS or MA/MS graduates who completed their last degree no longer than 6 years ago.
  • US/Canadian students in the first year of a Master’s degree program in Germany may apply to fund their second year.
  • Applicants may not have been living in Germany for more than 15 consecutive months by the time of application deadline.

Application Process

A complete application consists of the following parts:

  • Completed DAAD application form
  • Curriculum vitae 
  • Study Proposal outlining the academic and personal reasons for your proposed course of study
  • Letter of admission to study at a German program (may be submitted after being awarded the fellowship)
  • Information about your top 3 preferred master's programs
  • University degree Certificate(s), if applicable (e.g. Bachelor or Master)
  • Transcript(s)
  • DAAD language evaluation. The language evaluation form is a mandatory part of the application form, and must be completed and signed by a faculty member of the German Department at the applicant's institution.
  • 1 signed reference form from a university professor in your major subject or discipline
