Eligibility

College Global Health Research Scholars Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be matriculated University of Chicago undergraduate students in good standing and registered full-time during the award period. This grant program is open to UChicago undergraduates who are U.S. citizens, international students, DACA and undocumented students.
  • Applicants may be rising 2nd, 3rd, or 4th-year students. Recent graduates are not eligible, nor can funding be used the summer following graduation.
  • Open to all majors; however, the research project must be related to global health.
  • Applicants do not need to be already engaged in research with faculty to be eligible to apply. Students in the planning stages of their research with their faculty mentor or who have just been accepted to join a faculty-directed project are eligible to apply. They will be expected to effectively articulate their research plan and what they will contribute to the broader faculty-driven resarch project. The faculty mentor overseeing the undergraduate will be required to submit a letter of support.
  • Students must be working on UChicago faculty-driven research projects; College Global Health Research grants do not fund BA thesis, or self-directed or independent research projects (see below).
  • Students proposing research that involves human subjects must provide proof that they have secured IRB approval or have completed the application and are awaiting results.
  • Students must apply during the application cycle that most closely corresponds with the first quarter they will begin (or continue) their research. Applications will not be considered in the first pre-fall application cycle if the research goes on hiatus or does not begin until winter quarter, spring or summer quarter.
  • GPAs will be reviewed at the time of application and strong academic performance is expected.
  • Preference is given to academic-year projects or a project that straddles an academic year quarter and summer. Summer-only proposals will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • Grants are not made for research experiences that are less than 10 hours per week; the average committment for a grant of this amount is 10-13 hours per week during the academic quarter.

Additional expectations and award policies:

  • Once awarded, recipients must be actively engaged in their research and remain full-time undergraduate students during their award period (except summer).
  • If applicants have other scholarships, fellowships, awards or stipends supporting their research project and are also selected for a College Global Health Research Scholars grant, they may not be eligible to receive the full amount of this award. This will be determined in conjunction with the students’ financial aid officer, and an award will be adjusted according to policies related to receiving funds from multiple UChicago sources.
  • A student may receive a maximum of one College Global Health Research Scholars grant at a time and receive funding for only one grant in any given quarter.
  • A student is eligible to apply for a second College Global Health Research Scholars grant as long as they meet eligibility requirements for renewal awards or new awards. However, they may only receive a full College Global Health Research Scholars grant twice - for a total of four quarters during their time as a College student.
  • All College Global Health Research scholars will be required to present their research at the annual University of Chicago Undergraduate Research Symposium (May, 2021, and every May thereafter); if unable to present at the first symposium, they will be required to do so before graduation.
  • All recipients are strongly encouraged to consult with their financial aid officer to ensure they understand any tax consequences or financial aid applications associated with receiving a research grant such as a College Global Health Research award.

Not eligible:

  • BA thesis research of any type or duration (students looking for BA thesis support should pursue funding through their departments or the Dean's Fund for Undergraduate Research)
  • Independent or self-directed research of any type
  • Independent study courses or "reading" courses
  • Cannot be used for or with Metcalf funded experiences, or research undertaken in a non-academic environment
  • Students may not receive any funding for undergraduate research if they are also getting credit for the experience. This is a university-wide policy.
  • Students may not receive College Global Health Research Scholars funding if they are being paid for the research through other means (eg a faculty research budget, departmental sources, etc). Applicants will be asked to disclose all sources of funding and any other applications made for funding as a part of their Global Health Research Scholars application; funds may be adjusted in response to other grants received for the same research.

The College Global Health Research Scholars Program is a research scholars program generously funded by the Pozen family. It was created and is managed by the College Center for Research & Fellowships (CCRF), with the support of the Social Sciences Collegiate Division. Questions about the program from faculty or students should be directed to Dr. Nichole Fazio, Executive Director of the College Center for Research and Fellowships (nfazio@uchicago.edu).
