Opportunity Description:
Capsule Communicator is a science communication research unit focused on space science and exploration, specifically astrobiology, the field devoted to searching for signs of life beyond Earth. This research opportunity seeks an undergraduate researcher with an interest in science communication and space science to assist a research program into how a potential major discovery in the search for life in the universe should be communicated to different non-expert audiences. Research topics include best practices for science communicators, promoting public understanding of science, combating misinformation, communicating risk, and providing big picture context on the nature of scientific discovery and consensus. An interest in science communication, history and social studies of science, and space exploration is desired but not a requirement for this position. Desired skills and experience include traditional and online research, social media analysis, critical thinking, and report writing.
The position involves a weekly meeting and between 5-10 hours of research per week.
This opportunity interfaces with NASA’s Astrobiology Program (NAP) and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute. No prior knowledge of science communication or space exploration is required.
