Research Assistant for Prof. Connor Strobel
Opportunity Description:
Research Assistant for Prof. Connor Strobel
Disability policy in the US has generally been designed around physical variations and physical divergence in capacity. Our understanding of neurodivergence and non-physical disabilities has increased exponentially over the past several decades while policy and resource infrastructures have often lagged decades behind. The number of neurodivergent students and the diversity of their needs has challenged old and tightly budgeted systems. This mixed-method, multistate study asks: How do families with neurodivergent children contest for and get the resources they need to thrive? Our preliminary results complicate how you'd predict education quality, how we think about expertise, and suggest that this study could have important academic and policy ramifications. To accomplish this study, we are conducting surveys, interviews, focus groups, policy analysis, and, potentially, some archival work in Arizona, New York, and Oregon.
The student researcher is expected to gain skills in: crafting a literature review, policy analysis, qualitative coding and analyzing notes, exposure to recordings, survey data, and the development of skills for writing and presenting preliminary findings in academic conferences and other outlets.
