Perrigo/Life Sciences Institute (LSI) Summer Fellows Program

Opportunity Description:

The LSI is an independent research institute within the University of Michigan. Our faculty members use a range of tools and model organisms to explore the most fundamental biological and chemical processes of life. The culture at the LSI embraces innovation, collaboration and creative science that has a tangible impact on human health, longevity and well-being.

Each year the U-M Life Sciences Institute offers an immersive, hands-on fellowship in basic science research to undergraduate students from across Michigan. Fellows receive a stipend and housing support. As a fellow, you'll spend 10 weeks working side-by-side with mentors in the state-of-the-art laboratories at the Life Sciences Institute.

Primary Responsibilities:

Fellows will work full-time (40 hours / week) in their assigned labs over the summer, and are expected to stay for the full duration of the program. (Special allowances may be made for students whose school semester does not end before the program begins.)

During the summer, fellows will engage in opportunities for science communication and chalk talks, mentor lunches, workshops, dinner outings in Ann Arbor, and other activities to build a network with other summer fellows, current students and postdoctoral researchers, Perrigo alumni, and the wider University of Michigan and Life Sciences Institute communities.

At the end of the summer, fellows participate in a research symposium and present their work to the campus community, as well as create and present a poster highlighting the research conducted during the summer.

Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements:

Any U.S. citizen or resident alien (green card) who is an undergraduate student at any Michigan college or university at the time of the fellowship is welcome to apply. International students at Michigan colleges or universities should check with the international center at their home institution to ensure that their visa will allow participation.

An excellent academic record and participation in a wide range of campus activities are highly regarded, but are not the sole criteria for the selection process. Some experience working in a lab is preferred.
