Nine College students receive Fulbright Fellowships; five named alternates

University of Chicago undergraduates and alum continue to secure national recognition with nine students offered Fulbright fellowships to pursue research and teach English during the 2016-2017 academic year. An additional five College students and recent alum received named alternate designations.

The newest cohort of Fulbright scholars represent a wide-variety of disciplines including the biological sciences, linguistics, political science, mathematics, and sociology. Five students will use their Fulbright grants to engage in academic and/or independent research, while others will serve in English teaching roles. They will be working around the globe, in places such as Jordan, Argentina, Poland, Uruguay, Germany and South Korea.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program is the country's largest educational exchange program, offering opportunities for students and young professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching and school teaching worldwide. The program aims to facilitate cultural exchange and promote mutual understanding by supporting study or research abroad.

The 2016-2017 University of Chicago undergraduate and alumni scholars, their fields of study and locations they will travel to are:

  6. Veronika Kondev, Biological Sciences: Poland (Academic) - Project title: 'Role of mGluRs in addiction and mood disorders'
  7. Anna Newport, Political Science: Jordan (Academic) - Project title: 'Nationhood and Identity Construction in Jordanian Community Centers'
  8. Brandon Waldon, Linguistics, College alum: Germany (Academic) - Project title: 'Investigating Vagueness in Language Use'
  9. Matthew Walsh, Economics, Political Science, College alum: Argentina (Academic) - Project title: 'Design Implications of Argentina's Most Successful Antipoverty Program: A CCT Study'
  10. Alternate: Madeline Klinger, Biological Sciences: Germany (Academic) - Project title: 'Assessing Learning Ability in Visual Adaptation Mechanisms'; fully funded by DAAD Grant
  11. Alternate: Jane Gordan, NELC, College alum: UK Partner Award – University College London (Study)
  12. Alternate: Juliana White, Art History, Cinema and Media Studies: Taiwan (English Teaching Assistant)
  13. Alternate: Mary Bittner, Public Policy: Norway (Academic) - Project title: 'Socio-Economic Division in Oslo Seen Through Football Rivalries'
  14. Alternate: Matthew Sullivan, Biological Chemistry: Norway (Academic) - Project title: 'Biochemical Characterization of Novel Protein Methyltransferase Activity'

With the recent success of UChicago graduate students, nineteen of whom received Fulbright grants, a total of twenty-eight (28) University of Chicago students have received Fulbright fellowships for the 2016-17 academic year. An additional nine were named as alternates.
