2024 UChicago Fulbright Campus Process

Eligibility for the 2024 UChicago Fulbright Campus Process

  • Current College Students: Third- and fourth-year students enrolled in the College, as well as UChicago BA/MA candidates who are in four-year programs are eligible for the 2024 Fulbright Cohort
  • Alumni of the College: College alumni who had their degrees conferred June 2022 or later and who have not enrolled in graduate school are eligible for the 2024 Fulbright Cohort
    • CCRF staff are not able to support the Fulbright applications of College alumni who had their degrees conferred prior to June 2022. Alumni who fall into this category are encouraged to apply “at-large” for Fulbright (see “Getting Started,” Step 2)
    • Alumni who apply “at-large” are not eligible for a campus interview, University endorsement, and CCRF advising support or draft review
    • College alumni who are in graduate school or who have completed a graduate program should contact the fellowships office at their current institution
  • UChicago Graduate Students: University of Chicago graduate students and BA/MA candidates in their 5th year should apply through a separate campus application process

Workshops, Appointments, and Deadlines

Please note that the timeline below is an overview only, with dates and requirements subject to addition and change. Members of the 2024 UChicago Fulbright Cohort should refer to the 2024 UChicago Fulbright Campus Process course syllabus for the latest information about deadlines and requirements.

If you are a UChicago College alum who is having difficulty accessing Fulbright materials in the CCRF Resource Library or the 2024 Fulbright Shared Box Folder, please email Johanna Best at bestjl@uchicago.edu with the following information before 4:00 pm CT on Friday, May 10, 2024: first and last name, UChicago email address, current email address, year of graduation from the College, major, and the resources that you are trying to access.

Winter Quarter 2024 and early Spring Quarter 2024

  • Complete the Fulbright First Steps: Explore, Reflect & Actively Prepare
    • Attend or review a general Introduction to Fulbright workshop. A recorded version of this workshop is available now the CCRF Resource Library for those who were unable to attend the in-person or virtual sessions.
    • Attend or review an award-specific information session focused on the award type of most interest to you (Study, Research, Arts, or ETA). Recorded versions of these workshops will be available in the CCRF Resource Library in March for those who are unable to attend the in-person or virtual sessions. Register for upcoming sessions in March here.
    • After watching the Self-Reflection & Self-Assessment Presentation (available in mid-February in the CCRF Resource Library), complete the Self-Assessment Worksheet (available now in the 2024 Fulbright Shared Box folder)
      • Determine what Fulbright award type you hope to apply for (Study Award, Research Award, Arts Study Award, Arts Research Award, or English Teaching Assistant Award)
      • Determine which Fulbright host country you intend to apply to
    • Attend one or more award-specific group advising sessions to get your questions answered. While both in-person and virtual group advising sessions will be offered, please note that group advising sessions will not be recorded. (February - early May 2024). Register for upcoming sessions here. Additional group advising sessions will be available in early May 2024.
    • As you reflect on your preparation for a particular Fulbright award in a specific host country, note areas in which you would like to gain more experience or knowledge and then actively work to fill those gaps during Winter and Spring Quarter 2024. You might consider engaging in coursework, faculty mentored research, additional language training, volunteering, etc.
  • Gather and prepare materials for the Fulbright Campus Endorsement Application The 2024 Fulbright Campus Endorsement Application is now open in Survey Monkey (direct link: https://ccrf-uchicago.smapply.io/prog/2024_fulbright_campus_endorsement_application).
    • After watching the Recommendations Presentation (available now in the CCRF Resource Library), determine who you want to ask for a recommendation for the Campus Endorsement Application.
      • For the Campus Endorsement Application, each potential ETA applicant will need one recommendation from an individual who has supervised them in a teaching, tutoring, or teaching-adjacent activity. The recommender should not be a peer.
      • For the Campus Endorsement Application, each potential Study Award or Arts Study Award applicant will need one academic recommendation letter from a faculty member in a field relevant to their proposed graduate program. The recommender should have a terminal degree in their field.
      • For the Campus Endorsement Application, each potential Research Award or Arts Research Award applicant will need two recommendations.  The recommenders should have terminal degrees in their field.
        • One academic recommendation letter from a faculty member in a field relevant to the proposed Fulbright project
        • Another research/creative practice recommendation letter from a faculty mentor who has supervised the applicant in a research/creative setting relevant to the proposed Fulbright project.
      • For the Campus Endorsement Application, each potential Austria Combined Award or Community-Based Combined Award applicant will need two recommendations
        • One teaching-focused recommendation letter
        • Another research-/community project-focused recommendation letter from a mentor who has supervised the applicant in a setting relevant to the proposed Fulbright project.
    • Update your CV
    • Potential Research Award, Arts Research Award, and Austria Combined Awards applicants only: After watching the Affiliation Letters Presentation (available now in the CCRF Resource Library), speaking with faculty mentors, and conducting your own research into potential affiliates in your host country, obtain a letter of affiliation.
    • Explore UChicago Library resources.
    • Open a Fulbright Campus Endorsement Application in Survey Monkey to determine what additional documents and information you will need to gather in advance. The Fulbright Campus Endorsement Application will be available in mid/late March 2024.

Spring Quarter 2024

  • Complete your Fulbright Campus Endorsement Application The 2024 Fulbright Campus Endorsement Application is now open in Survey Monkey (direct link: https://ccrf-uchicago.smapply.io/prog/2024_fulbright_campus_endorsement_application) and includes:
    • Biographical Information
    • Language Self-Evaluation(s)
    • Host Country Engagement Plan
    • Text responses (available now in the 2024 Fulbright Shared Box folder)
    • Current CV
    • Recommendation(s)
      • Please note that recommendations will be submitted directly to Survey Monkey by recommenders.
      • Applicants for the ETA, Study, and Arts Study Awards will need to request one recommendation, and applicants for the Arts Research Award, Research Award, and Austria Combined Awards will need to request two recommendations (see details above).
      • Applicants should plan ahead so that they can provide recommender(s) at least 4 weeks to complete their recommendation(s).
      • Recommendations will be due no later than 9:00 am CT on May 13, 2024, so that applicants have at least 3 hours to press submit before the 12:00 pm CT deadline.

  • May 13, 2024 at 12:00 pm CT: Submit your 2024 Fulbright Campus Endorsement Application in Survey Monkey.
  • May 28-31, 2024: Attend a Campus Interview (virtual)
  • Please note that submission of a Fulbright Campus Endorsement Application and completion of the Campus Interview do not guarantee University endorsement. Rather, only applicants who subsequently become members of the 2024 Fulbright Cohort will be eligible for University endorsement.

Summer Quarter 2024

  • Early June 2024: If invited by CCRF, become a member of the 2024 Fulbright Cohort by accepting the Canvas course invitation.
  • Attend or review workshops and presentations in Summer Quarter, including
    • Fulbright Statement of Grant Purpose (June 6-10, 2024)
    • Fulbright Personal Statement (June 13, 2024)
    • IRB Overview for the Fulbright Research Award (June 2024)
    • Short Answer Presentation (June 2024)
    • Library Resources Presentation (June 2024)
    • Fulbright SLATE Application Portal Presentation (July 2024)
  • June 13, 2024: First Draft Deadline for the Statement of Grant Purpose and two short answer question responses (Host Country Engagement and Future Plans)
  • June 17, 2024: First Draft Deadline for the Personal Statement and one short answer question response (Abstract/Summary of Proposal)
  • Attend a First Draft Review Appointment with a CCRF advisor
  • July 15, 2024: Second Draft Deadline for the Statement of Grant Purpose, Personal Statement, and all short answer question responses
  • Attend a Second Draft Review Appointment with a CCRF advisor
  • August 5, 2024: Third Draft Deadline for the Statement of Grant Purpose, Personal Statement, and all short answer question responses
  • Attend a Third Draft Review Appointment with a CCRF advisor
  • August 26, 2024: Deadline for recommendations, language evaluations, and other supporting documents to be submitted to SLATE (Fulbright's application portal)
  • September 13, 2024: Fourth Draft Deadline for the Statement of Grant Purpose, Personal Statement, and all short answer question responses (no draft review)
  • September 24, 2024: Campus Deadline – All final application materials submitted to SLATE
  • October 8, 2024 at 5:00 pm Eastern Time: Fulbright National Deadline

It is your responsibility to be aware of and work to the 2024 UChicago Fulbright Campus Process application procedures and deadlines. The CCRF and its associated staff are not responsible for late submissions, including late or missing letters of recommendation, or missed campus or national deadlines. There is no recourse at the national level for missed deadlines or incomplete applications. Please plan accordingly.


Students with disabilities who have been approved for the use of academic accommodations by Student Disability Services (SDS) and need reasonable accommodations to participate fully in the 2024 UChicago Fulbright Campus Process should follow the procedures established by SDS for using accommodations. Timely notifications are required in order to ensure that your accommodations can be implemented.
