Funding for Undergraduate Researchers

Important policy note: Students on a leave of absence from the College are ineligible for College-based research funding, as well as general undergraduate research advising from CCRF staff. All grant recipients are expected to abide by all current University COVID-19 and travel policies.


The Quad Faculty Research Grant (formerly the Faculty College Research Fellows program) fosters excellence in scholarly research and creative inquiry by sponsoring academic-year research positions for undergraduates with UChicago faculty members of any rank or other senior scholars with University arts and research institutes (see eligibility below). The Quad Faculty Research Grant program connects faculty and senior scholars with talented College students to support their research projects. It gives undergraduates the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with faculty mentors and to develop their research skills. Faculty apply before autumn quarter for a grant to support undergraduate researchers during the academic year.

These awards are designed to support the student in securing vital undergraduate research experiences with faculty by reducing their financial burden during the academic year.

Quad Summer Undergraduate Research Grants are competitive, open-discipline awards intended to enhance the educational experience of University of Chicago College students by supporting summer scholarly undergraduate research and creative inquiry experiences through active participation in faculty-driven research. These awards are designed to support the student in securing vital undergraduate research experiences with faculty by reducing their financial burden during the summer.

The Straetz International Undergraduate Research Scholars Program offers competitive summer research grants for students wishing to pursue full-time advanced research opportunities with faculty at research institutes, archives, collections or in labs at international institutions of higher education or other types of academic research or arts institutes. Students pursuing intensive research projects in any-discipline will be encouraged to apply for a Straetz award for the summers after their second or third years in the College.

The Quad Undergraduate Research Conference Grant supports current undergraduates in the College engaged in scholarly research mentored by a faculty and/or other research mentor(s). It specifically supports conference participation and travel if a student is attending to present a research poster or to give an oral presentation. 
Applications accepted on a rolling basis to accommodate various conference dates, but application must be submitted at least three weeks in advance of conference travel or participation.
